Hatikvah

This is Israel's national anthem, Haktiva ("The Hope"), performed by Barbra Streisand in 1978.

The lyrics came from a poem written in 1878. The music was written in 1888.

Six decades later, in 1948, the Jews fought successfully to finally reclaim their homeland. Their hope had lasted twenty centuries.

Kol od balleivav penimah,
Nefesh yehudi homiyah,
Ul(e)faatei mizrach kadimah,
Ayin letziyon tzofiyah;

Od lo avdah tikvateinu,
Hatikvah bat shnot alpayim,
Lihyot am chofshi beartzeinu,
Eretz-tziyon vy(e)rushalayim.

As long as in the heart, within,
A Jewish soul still yearns,
And onward, towards the ends of the east,
An eye still gazes toward Zion;

Our hope is not yet lost,
The hope of two thousand years,
To be a free people in our land,
The land of Zion and Jerusalem.
