Dear Fellow Avid Reader:
Announcing: New format for JFS Book Beat 2010-11
We’ve selected three excellent books of interest to our group and we’ll schedule those in advance. And then we’re also going to have “Wild Card” Nights that we leave open so that the group can pick a hot bestseller that we all want to read. We’ll leave at least 6 weeks in between to read each book. (I’m attaching a list of book titles for consideration. I’d love to hear of any you in particular think we should read and discuss).
We’re really excited about our first JFS BOOK BEAT selection, The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer, taking place on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:30 pm. Amazingly, first-time novelist, Orringer has created a critically acclaimed masterpiece. She immerses us in 1930s Budapest as a young Hungarian Jew departs for the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris. There he meets Klara, a captivating Hungarian ballet instructor nine years his senior with a painful past. Nazi aggression drives them back to Hungary, where life for the Jews goes from hardship to horror, but love gives them the courage to endure. Reviewers say this book is impossible to put down.
Note: We will have 10 on-loan copies from Darien Library, if you prefer not to buy the book. Just call Lisa at JFS book in early September to arrange a time to pick up your copy.
Here are additional dates (Wednesday evenings) and titles:
December 7 – Wild Card Night (You help us choose which book to read!)
January 25 – To the End of the Land by David Grossman.
March 21 – Wild Card Night
May 2 – Rich Boy by Sharon Pomerantz
June 20 – Wild Card Night
Please plan to join us for what promises to be a series of scintillating evenings with lots of good conversation based on some fabulous reads. And by all means, bring a female friend! Feel free to forward this email to anyone else you know who may be interested in joining us.
To participate, please call the JFS office at 203-622-1881 or email Tatiana Nichiforova at tnichiforova@jfsgreenwich.org.
MasterCard, Visa or AMEX are accepted.
Looking forward to seeing you at JFS BOOK BEAT in October!Judi Margolin
